Scituate Arts Association Announces Annual Juried Show at Front Street Art Gallery

Call for Artists

The Scituate Arts Association is proud to announce its Juried Show, open to all, to be held at the Front Street Art Gallery from Wednesday, April 3rd through Sunday, April 28.th    Awards and a Reception will take place Friday evening, April 12th from 6:30 to 9 PM. One $500 prize for Best In Show will be given with up to $1000 in prizes to be awarded.  Join the Association’s celebration; plan to enter and to attend this noteworthy event!  

Entry Delivery: Entries must be delivered to the Ellis House, 709 Country Way, Scituate on Thursday, March 21, 5-7 pm or Saturday, March 23, 11 am-2 pm.  For a complete prospectus and entry form, go to www.scituateart.com, and click on 2018 Juried Show. The Show’s Jurors will be

Christine Bodnar,  a Marshfield artist and winner of the Best in Show at the Scituate Arts Association's 2018 Juried Show, has worked in all media but pastel painting is her medium of choice. She received her B.A. at Central Michigan University in 1982 with a studio major in painting and subsequently attended the Massachusetts College of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her artwork has been selected for exhibition in many national and international juried pastel exhibits throughout the country, and she has received awards from numerous art associations and publications, including the Pastel Journal and Artists Magazine. In June, 2019, she will be awarded Eminent Pastelist status from the International Association of Pastel Societies at the Pastel Convention in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Christine states that, “My work is derived from observing my natural surroundings; interpretation is contemporary realism with an expressive style..”    

Katherine Smit spent 4 years attending Pratt Institute and upon graduating, worked for Eastman Kodak while raising her family and she has always taught art.  She has taught for about 35 years in watercolor, drawing, and portrait and even worked as a courtroom artist for a while. She has enjoyed every minute!  Although her specialty is pastel portraiture, Katherine's watercolor and oil paintings of still life and local New England scenery have won many awards and hang in many homes, corporate offices and galleries.  She is a member of the NWS, Copley Society, Plymouth Art Guild, SAA, Pembroke Art Association, and the Pastel Society of America.  A past President of Duxbury Art Association and the Helen Bumpus Gallery, she has won numerous prizes and taught for many years at the DAA, Fuller Museum, Plymouth Center for the Arts, South Shore Center for the Arts and North River Art Society.

Jurgen Lobert is a Massachusetts-based fine art photographer born and raised in Germany.  Jurgen received a Ph. D in atmospheric chemistry from Gutenberg University in Mainz, Germany, before moving to the US in 1991.  Jurgen is a self-taught photographer who specializes in night photography and daytime long exposures as well as Urban Exploration.  According to Jurgen, there is a profound peace in roaming the nights in remote places, capturing otherworldly, hauntingly beautiful and serene scenery and the element of time.  Jurgen is an executive member of the Boston Camera Club and the founder and organizer of the Greater Boston Night Photographers Meetup group.  He has organized more than 100 photo excursions and he is a lecturer, instructor and judge for regional camera clubs.

   

Eligibility:                        

Entry is open to all artists. Work must be created outside a class or workshop environment and completed within the last 3 years. No maximum.

Media:

All works on paper or canvas must be properly framed and wired for hanging (no clip-on frames or saw tooth hooks).  Sculpture or other 3D works must have a suitable display. Due to space limitations, the SAA reserves the right to refuse oversize works (over 40”) or works whose subject is deemed non-PG.

Drop Off:

Hand deliver work to the SAA’s Ellis House, 709 Country Way, Scituate Thurs, March 21, 5-7 pm or Sat, March 23, 11 am-2 pm. SASE (self-addressed stamped envelope) required, stamps available for purchase.  Bring return address labels to speed up your paperwork.

Entry Fee:

Non-members fee: S12 per entry/3 for $30 at registration. 

Members fee:    $10 per entry/3 for $25.

You may join or renew membership at time of registration.  SAA will retain 33% of sales from artwork sold.

Awards:

$500 prize for Best In Show (a total of up to $1000 in prizes to be awarded).  Ribbons awarded for first, second and third place in each category: oil/acrylic, watercolor, pastel, drawing/printmaking/mixed media, photography and 3-D works.  Sufficient numbers are required per category to receive an award.

Awards Reception: Friday, April 12th from 6:30 to 9 at the Front Street Art Gallery, 124 Front Street, Scituate.  Works will remain on display during Gallery hours 4/3 through 4/28.  

Pickup:

Non-accepted works will be notified by mail the week of April 1st.  Pickup at the Ellis House, 709 Country Way, Scituate on Sat, April 6, 11am -2 pm or Thursday, April 11, 4 -7 pm.

Accepted works pickup

Front St. Art Gallery, 124 Front St, Scituate on Sun, April 28, at 3-5 pm or Monday, April 29, 4-6 pm. Gallery hours: Tues to Sat 11 am-5 pm. A storage fee of $5 per entry will be charged after May 5.

Liability:

Though care will be taken in the handling of works, the SAA/Front Street Gallery is not responsible for loss or damage.
