2018 Annual Juried Show - SAA and the Front Street Gallery
SAA Announces 2018’s Best of Show Winner:
Christine Bodner, Cape Dunes
Marshfield artist, Christine Bodnar, this year’s Best in Show Winner at the Scituate Arts Association's Juried Show has worked in all media but pastel painting is her medium of choice. She received her B.A at Central Michigan University in 1982 with a studio major in painting and subsequently attended the Massachusetts College of Art and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Her artwork has been selected for exhibition in many national and international juried pastel exhibits, and she has received awards from numerous art associations and publications, including the International Association of Pastel Artists and Artists Magazine. In May 2011 she was awarded Master Circle status from the International Association of Pastel Societies.
Christine states that, “ My paintings are inspired by how light sets the drama of color, shadow, and the rhythm in a composition. I do most of my painting on the southern shores of Massachusetts, where every day you can find a new challenge with the constant change of chromatic schemes and seasonal personalities. My work is derived from observing my natural surroundings, interpretation is contemporary realism with an expressive style. Whether it is the glorious hues of an evening sky or the interesting play of water reflections, I react and respond with pastel as my voice.”
Of her winning piece, Cape Dunes, Bodnar says, “As a painter who likes to work from life as much as possible, I find myself traveling to new locales offering new surroundings. For this painting a trip to the cape, which is always encouraging and inspiring, put me at Sandy Neck Beach in Barnstable. A quick study, since it was a bit breezy, launched two other paintings, this being one of them. I was triggered immediately to capture the light on the dunes and the sloping of the landscape. Another trip back is due.” The show’s Jurors-Scott Ketchum, Jeanne MacFarland & Anthony Visco- were immediately drawn to this dramatic piece, citing the works “Immediacy. Beautifully abstracted. Incredible contrast of strong lights against darks. Simple yet great design.”
Christine’s work, along with almost 80 other juried artists' entries from the South Shore and as far as Barnstable and the Bridgewaters to Weston and Wakefield, will be on display at the Front Street Art Gallery through April 29th with an Awards Reception on Friday, April 20st from 6:30 to 9. The Gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 11 to 5 and on Sundays from Noon to 5. The SAA’s Juried Show is sponsored by Business Patrons-Janet Cornacchio, Jack Conway, Scituate and Business Sponsors-- Coastal Heritage Bank and Frame Center of Hanover.
